HOT WATER BOILER (NATURAL GAS)
TROUBLE SHOOTING TIPS.
If you have a gas hot water boiler that is giving you trouble, follow these short tips to ensure you really need a service call.
#1- CHECK THERMOSTAT
Make sure your thermostat is set on heat and the temperature is higher than the room temperature.
Change the batteries. Even though it doesn’t say “low battery”, the batteries could be weak and not able to make the connection.
Make sure the thermostat is snapped back in position if you try to change the batteries.
#2- CHECK ALL SWITCHES AND CIRCUIT BREAKER
Check your circuit breakers and make sure they are not “tripped”. If one looks like it is in between on and off then turn it to the off position and back on. That resets the breaker.
Make sure all switches are in the up (on) position. Many people have switches either going down into their basement, at the top of the stairs, or before entering the attic. Sometimes the switches are labeled “boiler switch” and sometimes they just look like light switches.
Check the switch on the boiler. Always there is an emergency switch on the unit or on a wall next to the unit. Confirm its up (on).
Try to reset it by turning the switch off, wait a few seconds and back on.
#3- PILOT LIGHT IS LIT
Check to see if the pilot is lit. You would need to remove the front door and bend down to look inside the burner area. You should see a little pilot light (flame). If not then the pilot might have gone out. Follow the directions on the door that you removed to relight the pilot. Or wait till our technician comes out. If you relight the pilot, you should still have a technician come out and service the boiler to make sure it is running correctly and efficiently. By lighting it you might get your system going temporarily.
#4- STEAM BOILER ONLY
Check you have enough water in the boiler. You can find the level by looking at the sight glass located on the side of the boiler. The water level should be half way up the glass tube. If not find the valve that fills the boiler and add water. You should still have a technician come out and service the boiler to make sure it is running correctly. But this might get you going temporarily.
